Effects of Changing Modes on Item Nonresponse in Panel Surveys

Abstract To investigate the effect of a change from telephone to web mode on item nonresponse in panel surveys, we use experimental data two-wave survey. The treatment group changed after first wave, while control continued mode. We find that when changing web, “don’t know” answers increase moderately low level, refusal increases substantially very level. This is case for all person groups, although socio-demographic characteristics have some additional effects giving don’t know or
